Middle School Hat Parade

Wow! What amazing hats we created in Room 12. Children designed a hat inspired by the Living World. Children used a variety of materials such as; cardboard, paper mache and materials sourced from our 'Art Box'. I was blown away by their creativity and attention to detail. This project required a lot of patience and perseverance. I was so proud of the finished results (and so were the children).

Term 3-Room 12's REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE ASSEMBLY

This term we have been focused on trying to Reduce the amount of packages and rubbish in our lunch boxes. With the Terracycling program in place, I have been concerned about the amount of rubbish created by children's lunches. As a class we decided it would be good idea to get the message across to the school. We produced a fantastic assembly with the message REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE!
Our goal was for ALL of the students to participate in the class assembly (as this was a real challenge for some). Costumes were sourced, dances were choreographed and scripts were written.  A number of positive comments were received from parents and teachers about the high standard of the Assembly.

Terracycle Recycling Program Introduced to Otonga School

Terracycling NZ is an amazing initiative that is being introduced to NZ schools. I have enrolled Otonga School and we currently recycle Yogurt pouches, Colgate products, Glad wrap packaging and coffee pods. Each Monday I work with a group of children sorting and collecting this recycling which is then posted to Terracycle to be recycled into other products. We made it onto their Terracycle Facebook page.

EPRO 8 Challenge Term 2

Term 2 Gifted and Talented Unit

This term I have worked with the Senior G&T children training for the Epro8 Challenge.  The children had to complete a number of preparation challenges.

The EPro8 Challenge is an engineering and problem-solving race and competition. Teams compete to build large sized structures, solve practical problems and use pulleys, motors, gears, wheels & axles to invent machines that can complete simple tasks.

Equipment needed to be sourced from various shops around Rotorua, letters and transportation needed to be organised.
I needed a growth mind set as we had never competed in this challenge before. With team work, preparation, encouragement and collaboration the Otonga Lightening Bolts gained 2nd PLACE in the Rotorua Challenge and then competed in the Bay of Plenty Semi-Finals.   Lots of discussion afterwards about teamwork and perseverance.

Explorer Diorams I wanted the children to not only used recycled materials to create an artwork (using a shoe box) but also create a hands...
