Incredible Years/Incredible Teachers Programme

I was delighted to hear that I would be on the Incredible Years Journey. I had heard so much positive talk in regards to the IY course. I asked if I would be able to join the 2019 intake. I absolutely love all the positive energy that comes from the course. The observations have confirmed my positive teaching and I always look forward to the IY sessions. It 'fills my happy bucket' and inspires me on days when it is harder. A MUST for all teachers!

Lego Club established 2018 and continues in 2019

I absolutely love running the Lunchtime Lego club. The benefits of Lego for children is amazing! Lego Club was so popular that I had to run two sessions. One for the Junior School and one for the Middle/Senior School. I had to write a letter to the OSSG requesting funds for the Lego start up. They were very generous and funded $2000 for the Lego. This required a weekend trip to Auckland to pick up the Bulk purchase. Children love the Lego Club and so do I! Each week, children can creatively build or attempt the weekly Lego Challenge I set.

Pepeha O Te Kura

Term 1 2019
This term we have focused on getting to know each other. We have also learnt the school pepeha. Each morning children say the school pepeha. We creatively made cloaks with the school pepeha inside. The coloured feathers on the cloak represent their school house colour. Lots of positive comments from parents. I love creating an engaging, bright and personalised learning zone. l

Gardening Team/Butterfly Garden

I love being on the Enviro Team! I have loved working with Angela Donlon, developing the gardens- butterfly, herbs, vege patches. The children love being involved with gardening and especially harvesting their produce.

Dinah Harvey Maths Journey

In 2019 I have really had to challenge my mind set with Maths. Otonga School has been involved with Dinah Harvey's approach to Mathematics. This involves a lot of Rich Tasks and fluid groupings. After an intensive time learning the NZ Numeracy Project after returning to NZ, this has been a tough change in mindset. I saw so many benefits to the Numeracy project and I am very comfortable teaching this was. The children love the Rich Tasks and I am enjoying this new challenge.... although at times I do find I slip back to my comfort zone. So aiming for one Rich task maths session per week at this stage.

Victoria Mann Digital Technology PD/Workshop

Week 6 Term 1 2019
Staff Meeting -Digital Curriculum and Technology PD
Victoria Mann cam to speak to the staff and explain the new digital curriculum.
We also had a hands on workshop looking at Spheros and Bee-Bots, As a team I can see how we can use the Bee-Bots in term 2 for mapping Ihenga's Journey. This was a fun workshop and I have come away with lots of ideas, although I still find the Spheros a challenge😀😀

Thank you for having me in youir class today. What a lovely vibrant learning enviroment you have created. There was a busy, hum with everyone doing a great job of self managing their tasks while you did reading. Your children are positively affirmed and recognition is given to individual children to  build them up.

You are a vlauable member of the MIddle team as well. Thank you for putting your hand up to help with the organisation of trips, buying groceries and generally helping whenever you see a need.

To Consider:
You were doing reading when I came in to your class and there was a range of activities that the children were doing and having to self manage. Which parts of today's’ lesson went well for you ? and which parts didn’t ? why?

Principals Comments

Although it was a wrench to break the dreamteam, we are glad to have both of you fulltime. I endorse Cheryl’s comments about the value of your calm, nuturing and positive manner in your class.
I also wish to acknowledge the valuable role you play in the Gifted programme for our school, and for the STEM-based activities you have led. Your unique contribution through creative and environmental options for children is a valuable addition to the learning opportunities for our children.
thank you.
